Newcastle United target set for opportunity to shine bright in Brazil

Remy Cabella

Newcastle United's summer target Remy Cabella has been called up to France's World Cup squad. This is not good news for NUFC's chances of signing him.

Remy Cabella was on his way to Paris last night, don’t worry Newcastle United fans, he wasn’t going there to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, he was on his way to re-join the French national team at their Clairefontaine training centre. The ongoing injury problems to Franck Ribery came to a head yesterday and the Bayern Munich man had to pull out of the squad. Now, the Newcastle target is heading to Brazil this summer, and any thoughts of a quick deal being done to take him to St James’ Park have been dashed.

Cabella was a target for Newcastle in the winter, and with the winger set to leave Montpellier this summer the Premier League side rekindled their interest in the 24-year-old. Their initial bids of around £8 million have been rejected by Montpellier’s president Louis Nicollin, with the eccentric owner looking for around €15 million for his side’s star player.

Newcastle will have to up their bid if they are to have any chance of signing the winger, and now with Cabella on his way to the World Cup, their task has just become much harder.

There has already been talk regarding the other teams that may have an interest in the player. Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Marseille have been mentioned, and with his chance to appear on the biggest international stage now being realised, there will be other clubs alerted to his availability.

Newcastle United remain a realistic target for Cabella. They can offer him higher wages than any of the interested French clubs, and they can offer him regular first-team football, unlike the Parisian giants. Plus the appeal of the Premier League will be able to entice most players from Ligue 1.

Cabella will start as a substitute for France this summer, but with Ribery’s absence he is likely to get some opportunities off the bench to shine under the Brazilian sunshine. Newcastle fans will be hoping that he has an uneventful tournament, as any success will not only see LouLou Nicollin look for more money, but it will have other teams sit up and take notice.
