According the Spanish newspaper Marca, Carlos Vela has reportedly informed current club Real Sociedad that it would be difficult for him to remain at the club following an irresistible offer from La Liga winners Atletico Madrid.
A price for the 25-year-old, however, has yet to be decided, expected to exceed €10million, but with Los Rojiblancos likely to sell Luis Filipe and possibly Diego Costa, boss Diego Simeone is going to have adequate funds to bolster his squad ahead of next season.
If Arsenal wish to make their move for their former player, Arsene Wenger has to do it quickly as it’s looking increasingly likely that Vela will move on from Real Sociedad one way or another this summer.
Former Arsenal star Vela has been heavily linked with a return to the Emirates stadium this summer.
The current Real Sociedad star joined Arsenal in 2005, though he spent the majority of his time out on loan as he struggled to break through into the first-team quad.
Following a successful loan spell at Real Sociedad, he joined the club permanently in the summer of 2012, a decision which Wenger may still rue given his progression in Spain.
The Mexican international, however, has a clause inserted into his contract which allows the Gunners to re-sign the striker for as little as €4million. And given the season Carlos Vela has just had, who could blame them?
In 35 La Liga starts, he scored 16 goals and assisted a further 12 from a wide striker position. His goalscoring tally in all competitions reached 21, the best return of his career to date.
Strong reports suggested that Arsene Wenger would be interested in bringing him back to North London, even if it was only to sell him on later for a much bigger profit.
Such rumours, however, have gone cold over the past week and it appears the Gunners could miss their opportunity due to interest elsewhere.
