Today could be a huge moment in the career of Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
France have their last pre-World Cup warm-up game on Sunday against Jamaica, and there could be two changes to Didier Deschamps 23-man squad both before and after the fixture. There are doubts over the fitness of Franck Ribery, and now this morning, Clement Grenier is reported to have an abductor problem and could pull out of the squad today, with Schneiderlin the favourite to replace the Lyon player.
It would be an amazing opportunity for the Saints player, he has yet to receive his first senior cap for France, and if called up, he could play a part of Sunday’s friendly in Lille.
Ever since his move from French club Strasbourg, Schneiderlin has been a revelation in the English game. He has been a huge part of the successful side that climbed up from League One to the Premier League and at every step the young Frenchman was a significant part of Southampton’s excellent play.
Perhaps it was understandable when Southampton were in the English Championship that he never received that deserved opportunity in the national side. However, when his club won promotion to the Premier League and Schneiderlin showed he was able to play at the highest level, there were constant calls for the midfielder to receive that call, but it never came.
Named as one of Deschamps’ reserves for the World Cup was a huge moment for Schneiderlin, but now he is very close to gaining a place in the 23-man squad that will head to Brazil next week.
Grenier has been suffering from injury problems throughout the last few weeks of the season and it looks like the Lyon playmaker has picked up an abductor problem and he could be ruled out of the squad later today. It was a disappointing situation for the young midfielder, but it is hard not to be happy for Schneiderlin.
If he makes the 23-man squad, he will be the only uncapped member of the France team this summer, but you would have to imagine he won’t stay uncapped for long.
