Fjortoft says United chasing Schweinsteiger: Van Gaal loves him

Could United really be about to sign this world class midfielder? Former Norway striker Jan Age Fjortoft thinks so.

Jan Age Fjortoft has clearly had an informative discussion or two today with some of his many friends in the professional game.

Fresh from announcing on Twitter that 24-year-old Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos is in talks with Spanish giants Real Madrid, the Norwegian dropped an even bigger transfer bombshell by revealing Manchester United are intently pursuing the German club's vice-captain and German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger.

With Fjortoft stating that he has sources both side of the story confirming the interest, as well as confirmation that talks have already taken place, it looks like a transfer that would have been an unbelievable story yesterday may already be under discussion.

With no official comments from either club, United fans will likely have sit and wait for further news, but the prospect of signing Schweinsteiger, who scored against the Reds before being dismissed in the Champions League this year, will have them licking their lips. Louis van Gaal's appreciation of him, as well as his experience managing the German a few season ago, will almost certainly count in United's favour.

It remains to be seen of course whether Bayern would let two of their outstanding German players,  internationals that have graduated from the club's academy, leave in the same summer. But for Fjortoft to have reported it, and his choice of words in doing so, there must be some serious interest on behalf of United to sign at least one midfielder from the Bavarian giants this summer.

Schweinsteiger saw less game time last season than he has in recent years, making 36 appearances but still managing 8 goals at the Allianz Arena.

At 29, now may be the time for Bayern to sell the playmaker and still receive a substantial fee, but the midfielder has been one of the club's and Germany's biggest stars over the last decade, and already has a huge 23 goals in 101 games for his country. His signing would surely be a coup for United, and what's more, he would be the perfect kind of combative yet classy midfielder the club have been lacking.
