Barca officials have met to discuss transfers ahead of next season, but two Liverpool targets weren't mentioned.
Catalan based newspaper Sport has revealed Barcelona officials held a meeting yesterday to discuss the forthcoming season, with transfers at the heart of talks between manager Luis Enrique, the club’s sporting director and other high ranking members of the club.
Several names were reportedly mentioned in the meeting with Marquinhos, Claudio Bravo, Jeremy Mathieu and Ivan Rakitic all discussed as targets following the World Cup in Brazil.
What the paper suggests wasn’t discussed was the players who could leave Barca this summer, with two Liverpool targets included in the form of Javier Mascherano and winger Alexis Sanchez.
Mascherano has been tipped for an Anfield return although Brendan Rodgers has just shown his hand in the defensive midfield position with a £10 million deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Emre Can.
Alexis Sanchez was suggested as a Liverpool target at the start of this week, as the Chilean is someone who can come into the squad and fill a problematic left midfield role for the team.
Liverpool don’t have some as talented or as consistent to play down the left, as Raheem Sterling is down the right flank, which saw Rodgers use several players out of position down that side of the midfield last season.
Mascherano’s chances of leaving are slim at best.
When the discussion between Barca officials and Luis Enrique comes up over his future, it’s likely that Barca’s new boss will encourage the powers that be to resist pulling the trigger.
The Argentine is an extremely experienced member of this current Barca setup and Enrique needs players like that to be able to trust heading into his first season in charge.
With Cesc Fabregas expected to leave, Barca will generate funds, which may also prevent them from having to do a deal for Alexis Sanchez.
Sport doesn’t mention either Liverpool target, more than likely because Enrique doesn’t see the future of either player as a pressing issue. Therefore, the issue of outgoing players could well be delayed until after Brazil.
