PSG star comments on Luis Suarez’s ‘dream’

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani says that he and his Uruguay international teammate Luis Suarez are determined to win the World Cup.

Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez will form a lethal partnership in attack for Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

Having helped their country reach the semi-finals of football’s biggest competition four years ago in South Africa, this summer the duo will be determined to go all the way.

Uruguay last won the World Cup back in 1950, but they have shown recent signs that they can challenge for top honours once again. Three years ago in 2011, La Celeste won Copa America, and they will be bent on bringing back the World Cup trophy.

The advantage of playing on their own continent will be crucial for the Uruguayans, who have been pitted in a very tough group. England, Italy and Costa Rica complete Group D, which is claimed by many to be the ‘Group of Death’.

Both Cavani and Suarez are 27 years of age, and this might be their last realistic chance of winning the World Cup. Both will head into the tournament on form, having enjoyed successful campaigns with Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool respectively, and Cavani wants to fulfil the “dream” he shares with his compatriot Suarez.

‘We want to arrive in Brazil in the best condition possible to help our country’, he told FourFourTwo magazine. ‘It’s a dream we both share. We played together in South Africa and in the last four years we’ve matured and improved as a partnership. It’s almost like we have our own little rivalry to spur each other on and help our country perform at its best’.

Suarez was arguably the best striker in Europe in the 2013-14 campaign and was the main reason why Liverpool finished as high as second in the Premier League. Although Cavani did not have the best of seasons at Ligue 1 giants PSG and was played out of position on the wings, the former Napoli man remains very lethal in front of goal.

It will not be easy for Uruguay to win the World Cup this summer, as they will have to compete with Brazil, Argentina, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany among others. However, hope springs eternal...
