Prandelli: Luxembourg draw not a failure

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli insists that drawing with Luxembourg in last night's friendly wasn't a failure for the Azzurri.

The Italian press are up in arms over last night's disappointing 1-1 draw with Luxembourg, but Cesare Prandelli has played the result's significance down.

Italy had been expected to thrash a Luxembourg side who were destroyed 5-1 by Belgium last week, but instead they struggled to find the net.

Prandelli was testing a 4-5-1 formation with AC Milan marksman Mario Balotelli as the lone striker and Super Mario looked frustrated for much of the evening.

Super Mario did however set up the goal from Claudio Marchisio and rattle the woodwork but the Italian public were less than impressed.

"This wasn't a failed test," coach Prandelli claimed after the final whistle in Perugia.

"This was an experience we had to have because we haven't played many games and we know we didn't shine, but we will leave fully confident that we can have a great World Cup.

"We need to get better at closing down the opposition because we have more players in midfield and fewer on the wings.

"For the Luxembourg goal we completely messed up the marking on the corner."
