Manchester United's worst fears on William Carvalho are realised

Sporting Lisbon

Manchester United will be alarmed to learn Monaco have entered the bidding for William Carvalho.

Ever since Monaco's intention to appoint Leandro Jardim became clear, the possibility the club would attempt to sign William Carvalho was a very real one.

Until that point it was Manchester United who were the favourites to sign the Portuguese international, with reports even claiming at one stage in March that a £35 million fee had been agreed.

United were said to have scouted the central midfielder numerous times, and he was said to be very high up at least on David Moyes' list of priorities.

Leandro Jardim was Carvalho's coach at Sporting Lisbon last season, when he broke through to establish himself as a regular and won his first caps for his country.

Now confirmed as manager at Monaco, it had been suspected that the Ligue 1 challengers would make a bid, and usurp Manchester United; just as they did with James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho last summer.

Now it appears that has become a reality.

Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias report that Monaco have had an opening bid of €33 million (£26.8 million) turned down by Sporting Lisbon.

Sporting Lisbon the paper report, want €45 million (£36.5 million) in order to do a deal. Just this week they bought Oriol Rosell, the former Barcelona youngster to play in central midfield, making clear they were planning for life without Carvalho.

Monaco have the resources to see that through, and have made their intentions clear via their opening bid - that they want to buy William Carvalho.

Manchester United may have been hoping Jardim may have struck an agreement with his former club, not to move for his old players.

This now looks like it will not be the case, and United's worst fears relating to Carvalho may just be coming true.

With Monaco able to offer tax-reduced salary, Champions League football, less pressure, and his old coach at the helm, luring him to Old Trafford just got a lot harder.
