Manchester United target Schweinsteiger: I'm better than ever

Bastian Schweinsteiger Injured In Bayern Munich Training

Manchester United will be buying a player in top condition if they move for Bastian Schweinsteiger, he believes.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is in many ways the perfect fit for Louis van Gaal's system.

Not only is he a talented footballer, but his winning attitude and brash and argumentative nature ensures he is effectively Van Gaal's hound dog doing his snarling and bidding on the pitch.

That style is not necessarily ideal for Pep Guardiola's tiki-taka, with Schweisteiger even criticising the Spaniard early on at Bayern.

It's little surprise that the German international is said to be available for transfer this summer, especially after a season during which he made just 22 Bundesliga starts, missing a sizeable chunk through injury.

At 29, and valued at over £30 million, Manchester United fans may well be reticent that they may get stung into over-paying for a player past his prime, rather than a Toni Kroos who is still approaching his peak years.

Schweinsteiger is though adamant he is better than ever, and in typically confident style he has been telling reporters just that.

He told BILD: "This absolute best performances evolve with age more and more. I can therefore say quite clearly: I am now at 29 years old, more willing, (and) stronger than I was at the beginning of my career.

"Talent is not enough. One needs in addition to the absolute will and also a great perseverance to get to the top.

"The World Cup in Brazil is a huge motivation. At 29, I have the experience necessary to lead the way."

Winning the World Cup would be one way to send a message to Van Gaal, but the Dutch boss will know all about the German already, and it's likely now up to Ed Woodward to try to get a deal done.

If Germany do go on to triumph at the tournament, it may however force Guardiola to reconsider giving the star midfielder one more year.
