New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was presented with his worst nightmare last night as his Netherlands side took on Wales in a friendly ahead of the World Cup.
Starting in attack was the man many expect to be named Manchester United captain next season and the man who cut a somewhat demoralised figure under David Moyes; Robin Van Persie.
LvG’s heart would have sunk when he noticed the Dutch attacker limping, which prompted a substitution in the 46th minute of the game, which the Netherlands went on to win 2-0.
There have been serious questions over Van Persie’s fitness as the build up to the World Cup has gathered pace.
In typical LvG fashion, the boss has asked fans and the media to trust him over the way he handles Van Persie, pointing out there is still a long time before the Netherlands face their first game against World Champions Spain.
The worry from a Manchester United point of view is the pressure van Gaal will be under to use Van Persie at the tournament in Brazil.
He’s one of the side’s most experienced players and someone who can make a real difference to this Netherlands team in the high pressure situations to come over the next few weeks.
The temptation to start him and throw him into important games is obvious and it risks making the injuries he’s carrying worse, which then affects the start of United’s season and van Gaal’s reign at Old Trafford.
The Netherlands do not have a naïve setup and they are likely to monitor this situation right up until kick-off against Spain even though the player himself has suggested the problem isn't serious.
If Van Persie is anywhere close to being match fit then he’ll play because he’s a top class player, but LvG will have one eye on United and fans shouldn’t worry because he won’t do anything which could leave RVP with a long term problem.
Phew. Robin van Persie sustained a mild groin injury tonight, but it's not too serious, expected to line-up against Spain next week. #Oranje— Mohamed Moallim (@iammoallim) June 4, 2014
