A relaxing new exploration game from British developers Honeyslug is coming exclusively to the PlayStations
Hohokum will be joining Sony’s catalogue of exclusive indie titles this summer. Quirky, colourful and beautifully fluid, Hohokum is a game without scores or time limits which in the words of the game’s developer, Richard Hogg is about, “"relaxing in a space and just enjoying the experience and the music, instead of trying to complete it to make progress." The are some tasks for you to perform so the game does have a point.
Playing as a snake like creature, the ‘Long Mover’, a name you may recognise from the British comedy series The Mighty Boosh, you use some basic controls to float around and explore a non-linear game world. Along the way other creatures in the game can jump on your back and join you on your adventure.
Hohokum does away with established game mechanics in favour producing a deeply imaginative and free-roaming explorative experience. Enhancing this is a entrancing, ambient layered soundtrack that is manipulated by the gameplay.
Announcing Hohokum’s release on the PlayStation Blog co-creator and designer Ricky Haggett decribed the making of Hohokum saying, “ We didn’t have a clear mechanic “hook” when starting out — more an overall sense of wanting to make a game that was relaxing and evoked a particular sense of free-form play. Over time this approach allowed the game we have today to emerge organically”
Below is a video going into more detail around the concepts and creative processes behind Hohokum.
Hohokum is set to release on PS3, PS4 and Vita it will come to North america on August 12th and Europe on August 13th. Let us know what you think of the game in the comments below.
