Fabio Coentrao is on the verge of a huge contract extension at Real Madrid according to Marca.
The Manchester United target was in fine form for Los Blancos over the second half of last season and Florentino Perez appears to have moved quickly to prevent any chance of him moving after the World Cup.
Coentrao’s consistency was enough to keep Marcelo out of the side and the newspaper has revealed that the framework of a new contract is already in place for the Portuguese star.
“Fabio Coentrao’s new Real Madrid contract is done and dusted. The club had been eager to extend the Portuguese full-back's deal since last summer, but only now have the two parties put pen to paper,” reports Marca.
New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is now faced with a situation where he may not have a choice other than to put all of his eggs into one basket as he seeks a left-back replacement for Patrice Evra.
All of the speculation and rumours have pointed towards United completing a big money deal for Southampton youngster Luke Shaw, with the Saints likely to hold out for around £30 million.
Coentrao was strongly linked with United during the David Moyes era and he would have been an alternative had LvG not been able to get a deal done for Shaw following the World Cup.
A potential alternative for van Gaal at United could be to focus on some of the young Dutch talent he now has a great deal of knowledge about, due to his role as the Netherlands international coach.
Bruno Martins Indi is a good example. A versatile 22-year-old defender LvG has used extensively in the national setup and someone he could put a lot of faith in at the World Cup, which starts next week.
The Feyenoord defender could find it difficult to turn down the lure of a move to Old Trafford, but any move would probably depend on a deal for Shaw falling through.
There’s no doubt that Coentrao signing a new deal is a blow but it’s one United can recover from.
