Diego Costa has reportedly had his medical with Chelsea ahead of an official move but Jose Mourinho isn’t finished and wants another high profile striker to create an intimidating attack at the club next season.
The Daily Mail suggests that player will be Bayern Munich forward Mario Mandzukic, strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, who is thought to be available following Robert Lewandowski’s move to the Allianz Arena.
Should the Blues pull off a deal for the Croatian, they have a potentially formidable attack heading into next season; Costa, Mandzukic, Romelu Lukaku and one of Fernando Torres or Demba Ba.
“The star striker (Costa) would be Jose Mourinho’s first summer signing and the Chelsea boss is keen to sign another forward, with Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic among his list of targets,” reports the Mail.
If Mourinho is serious about trying to sign Mandzukic then there are a couple of obstacles that Chelsea will have to overcome to get the deal completed.
Firstly, they’ll have to convince the player that it’s the right move, which will be difficult if they already have the Costa signing sealed.
Mandzukic’s motive for leaving Bayern Munich is to play regularly with his starting place threatened by Lewandowski at the German club.
Therefore, it would be bizarre for him to jump into a high profile move where there’s no guarantee that he’ll be the starting striker next season.
Secondly, the system that Mourinho likes to use at Chelsea would prevent Mandzukic from partnering Costa in attack.
The Portuguese coach prefers a system of using one player up front in attack and packing the midfield to dominate the possession stats and make Chelsea’s defence difficult to break through.
For Mandzukic and Costa to be able to play together, the Croatian would have to change his game which risks the potential of unhappiness before he’s even settled in at Stamford Bridge.
That could create a situation similar to what has happened at Paris Saint-Germain where Edinson Cavani has been played in a wider role to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic through the middle.
Needless to say at points last season, Cavani was critical of Laurent Blanc and the way he was being used. Should Mandzukic speak out over his Chelsea role, Jose Mourinho won’t hesitate to confine him to the bench.
It would be a terrific signing but one Mourinho needs to be wary of if he goes for it.
