Chiellini: Italy will be ready for England

Italy slumped to an embarrassing 1-1 draw with Luxembourg in Perugia, but defender Giorgio Chiellini isn't too concerned.

The Italian players should probably not read the newspapers today after only managing a draw against minnows Luxembourg, but Giorgio Chiellini has called for calm.

Italy, who are preparing for a tough World Cup group that sees them take on England, Uruguay and Costa Rica, suffered an embarrassing setback in Perugia.

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio put the 2006 World Cup winners ahead with a header after nine minutes, but after that Italy looked stilted and short of ideas.

Mario Balotelli and Antonio Candreva rattled the woodwork, but Luxembourg stunned the home fans by levelling Maxime Chanot in the closing stages.

Italy had been looking to run up a decent score against a side ranked 120th in the world, but instead Chiellini was left trying to reassure the public.

"We're disappointed with the result because we thought we'd do well," the defender said on Sky Italia.

"Over the years we've proved ourselves to not be great in friendlies but luckily soon it will be the serious stuff.

"We will go forward with confidence and we will be ready in 10 days' time. We need to pay attention to set pieces, we lacked a little bit of concentration today."

Italy open their 2014 World Cup campaign against England in Manaus on June 14.
