Diego Costa has always been Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s number one transfer target this summer, and it appears that the Portuguese is set to get his man.
Recent reports have suggested that Costa has passed his medical and has only got to agree personal terms with the English club. Chelsea will pay £32 million to Atletico Madrid for the Spain international and finally Mourinho will get a ‘proper striker’.
Costa has been an absolute force for Atletico in the past 18 months and was one of the top strikers in entire Europe this season. A late bloomer, the 25-year-old was a key reason why Diego Simeone’s side won La Liga and reached the final of the Champions League this campaign.
Strong, athletic and clinical, Costa is the striker that Mourinho has been lacking all season. A world-class centre-forward, the former Braga man is expected to be a huge success in the Premier League.
But the quality that supersedes all those aforementioned attributes of Costa is this: he is a fierce competitor and wants to win at any cost. It is the exact mentality that Mourinho has, which is why the former Real Valladolid forward is the perfect signing for the 51-year-old.
Mourinho has never shied away from playing ‘mind games’ or ‘parking the bus’ against teams against whom he thinks he cannot win. The former Inter Milan and Real Madrid coach has always put winning before anything else, and it appears that Costa has the same mentality.
‘If we don’t win, then I go home and I’m f****g pissed off,’ he told FourFourTwo magazine. ‘Football matches are for winning, not playing’.
Costa was speaking ahead of his 2014 World Cup finals adventure with Spain in Brazil. The striker has been involved in many on-pitch rows with opposition players and is someone who hates to lose. He is a fighter, one who will not give up until the very end, and it looks like that he is heading to Chelsea.
Mourinho and Costa would make a very deadly combination.
