Turan, now 27, emerged as a 17-year-old with Galatasaray back in his native Turkey, and went on to make almost 200 appearance for the club before eventually moving to Atletico Madrid in 2011. Plenty of clubs around Europe had been watching Turan, but it was Atletico who landed his signature for around €12m.
Unsurprisingly, Turan has proven to be a star in the Spanish capital, and he has played a key role in Diego Simeone's side, as Atleti won their first La Liga title since 1996, and reached the Champions League final as well - but he almost played no part at all for the club.
It was recently revealed in Turkey that Turan almost signed for Manchester United last summer. Acun Ilicali, a sports journalist in Turkey, admitted this week that Turan was all set to sign for the Red Devils last year - but the club chose to cancel the deal in order to spend their money on Everton midfielder Fellaini.
"Arda was very close to signing for United last season, but they decided to get Fellaini instead," said Ilicali. "I thought it was a big mistake, but Atlético were successful, I didn't expect that."
Moyes' time at Old Trafford was dismal to say the least, and the Scot was duly relieved of his duties in April after a terrible season in charge. He made plenty of mistakes having been chosen to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at United, but this ranks up there with the very worst of them.
Turan is a supremely talented winger who possesses creativity that few United players can match, and whilst United did need to bring in a midfielder last year, they sacrificed signing one of the best wingers in Europe in order to sign a midfielder who has failed miserably.
United now have to look on at what could have been, as Turan celebrates clinching the La Liga title - and Moyes will wonder whether things could have been different had he signed the Turkish international rather than £27.5m Fellaini.
