Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is on the lookout for a new right-back this summer as Bacary Sagna is all-but set to leave the club.
The French international has been at the Emirates for seven years, yet with his contract expiring, it appears the 31-year-old is opting to look elsewhere.
Confident, forward-thinking and athletic, Sagna’s imminent departure leaves Arsene Wenger with some big shoes to fill and the Gunners boss has a tough job on his hands finding a replacement.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, the Frenchman’s first choice target is the experienced Atletico Madrid right-back Juanfran.
With interest in the 29-year-old dating back to last summer, it appears an easy fit all-round. However, just like last year, the Spanish international has no intentions of leaving the Spanish capital after acknowledging Arsenal’s interest.
“My representative and the boss know about it [the interest], but for me the most important is to be in Atletico Madrid, this is my home. I have never rejected anyone, that is the reality. I know that there is interest from Arsenal, just like there was last year, but there hasn’t been an offer of any type.” He said, quoted by the AS.
Since moving to Atletico Madrid from Osasuna in 2011, Juanfran has gone on to make 111 appearances in all competitions for the club, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Europa League.
His fantastic season has been rewarded with a return the Spanish national set-up, and he got the nod over Real Madrid right-backs Alvaro Arbeloa and Daniel Carvajal to participate in this summer’s World Cup.
