Déjà vu: Wilfried Bony's striking comparisons to Benteke a year ago

Swansea City's Wilfried Bony has been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea but there was a similar situation involving Christian Benteke a year ago.

The Swansea City forward is reportedly being targeted by the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea as a move away from the Liberty Stadium this summer looks like a real possibility.

The Ivorian moved to the Swans last summer from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem for a club-record £12million and enjoyed a very good debut season in English football.

He scored 16 goals in 34 Premier League games and netted 25 in all competitions as the 25-year-old played a pivotal role in the clubs Europa League campaign.

However, if you think back to this time last year there was a very similar situation involving Aston Villa's Christian Benteke.

The Belgian forward had a remarkable first season in the Premier League with the Villains, and was tipped to move to a top club in the summer.

He handed in a transfer request in July before signing a new four-year contract just 10 days later and ended up staying with the club.

Benteke struggled with injuries for much of the last campaign, but when fit was rarely putting in the same displays that we had seen in the 2012/13 season.

After such a good debut season in the Premier League, Benteke struggled to make the same impact last campaign, and the difference in stats in noticeable.

He did play eight games less but his returns in and around goal were almost halved in his second year, and there is a danger that Wilfried Bony might replicate the dip in form.

Clubs are always wary of "second season syndrome" and are reluctant to pay expensive transfer fees for players that have only had one good season in the top flight.

Bony's stats from last season are extremely similar to Benteke's in his first year, and the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea should think twice before splashing out on the forward.

Both Bony and Benteke made 34 appearances in their first season's in English football, with both getting four assists.

The Villa forward did score three goals more than Bony, but the Ivorian had four more shots on goal.

The statistics are strikingly similar and there will be a slight concern that Bony's form will dip into next season.
