Sergio Aguero is a world-class striker and has been a key player in Manchester City’s Premier League title triumphs in 2012 and 2014, but now after three years at the Etihad Stadium, he could be on his way to Barcelona.
Reports in Spain suggest that the Catalan giants are keen on signing the 26-year-old striker. Despite having a wealth of attacking talent, Barca’s new coach Luis Enrique wants to sign the Argentine and deploy a front three of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Aguero. The Blaugrana endured a trophyless 2013-14 campaign under Gerardo Martino, who has since been let go.
Aguero has always been expected to return to Spain at some point in his career. Having been a huge success at Atletico Madrid during his five years in the Spanish capital, the Argentina international was said to be heading to Real Madrid. However, it now appears that Barcelona could be his destination.
That’s essentially because of the presence of a certain Lionel Messi at Camp Nou. Aguero and Messi are long-term friends, having played together for Argentina during their successful 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship campaign. They are also FIFA partners on the games console and have a great relationship with each other.
Messi and Aguero are going to play together at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil this month, and the former has underlined just much they understand each other, both on the pitch and off it.
‘We’ve known each other for years, since we were just a pair of kids of 14, 15 years of age’, he told FourFourTwo magazine. ‘We’ve always enjoyed playing together.
‘We have a great friendship away from the pitch and that really helps us to get the best out of each other when we run out onto the pitch. He’s without doubt a player who’s different to the rest because he can do special things’.
Just days ago, Aguero’s father made a massive statement about his son’s future plans. Leonel del Castillo told Esports COPE: ‘He would love to go to Barcelona, but Manchester City will make it impossible’. And now it seems that he would be welcomed and well looked after in the Catalan capital, thanks to Messi.
Aguero is one of City’s big assets and it is unlikely that they will let him leave. The former Independiente striker himself has said that he is happy in Manchester, but things could change over the next few months.
