Manchester United boss helps select German maestro previously linked to Manchester United in a squad of Europe's best.

Manchester United may have abandoned their pursuit of Bayern Munich's Toni Kroos for now, but their former boss clearly holds him in high regard.

Sir Alex Ferguson chaired UEFA's technical committee group last week, and selected with the rest of the panel, 18 players to form the Champions League squad of the season based on 2013/14.

Not one Premier League player made the cut, despite Chelsea reaching the semi-finals, and both Manchester clubs plus Arsenal also reaching the knockout stages.

Chelsea can claim technically to have a representative in loanee Thibaut Courtois, but it's thanks to his displays for runners-up Atletico Madrid he made it in.

Bayern's contract rebel Toni Kroos did make it in, and it's likely Sir Alex Ferguson would not have any qualms if the Red Devils were to re-visit the possibility of snapping up the German international should they receive encouragement a deal may yet be possible.

The full squad chosen, announced yesterday by UEFA is as follows: Courtois, Neuer; Godin, Lahm, Carvajal, Pepe, Sergio Ramos; Gabi, Iniesta, Kroos, Di Maria, Modric, Alonso; Reus, Diego Costa, Robben, Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo.

The omission of Barcelona Lionel Messi emphasises what a below par season he has had by his standards.

As per United, for names like Reus and Kroos to see themselves on this list, will spell out that they will have to deal with not being in the competition entirely for at least a season should they elect to join the Red Devils.
