Stats: Who is the better England striker - Rooney or Sturridge?

Three Lions Wembley

England duo Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge both gave admirable accounts of themselves in the Premier League this term but which of the two is the better?

28-year-old Wayne Rooney functioned as more of an attacking playmaker or a No.10 as he is for club and country, this term under David Moyes’ Manchester United whilst Daniel Sturridge set the Premier League alight with his performances up front for Liverpool alongside Luis Suarez.

The 24-year-old Reds striker scored 21 goals and made 7 assists across 29 appearances for Liverpool in the league this term compared to Rooney’s tally of 17 goals and 10 assists across 29 appearances for Manchester United, albeit in a slightly deeper role.

They will likely play together, in tandem, this summer for England at the World Cup in Brazil but what are the key differences between the two player’s performances?

Daniel Sturridge 587 29 2,275

The achieved very similar pass completion rates, although Rooney’s was slightly higher at 80.1% to Sturridge’s 79.3% although Rooney averaged almost twice as many passes per game, 45.7 on average, than Sturridge’s 25.5 per game on average.

Rooney also averaged more shots per game, 3.5 to Sturridge’s 3.4, and Rooney achieved a higher accuracy rate with his shots, 53% of which were on target, to Sturridge’s 49% on target.

The elder of the two Englishmen was also more comfortable in possession, he averaged 1.4 dribbles per game to Sturridge’s 1.3 but Sturridge was disposed less often, 1.8 times per game to Rooney’s 2.3 times. However, Rooney won more of his aerial duels, 0.9 per game to Sturridge’s 0.2 and Rooney was named Man of the Match for United seven times across the season to Sturridge’s two times for Liverpool.

Overall, Rooney was as dangerous as Sturridge in front of goal and slightly more efficient when it comes to shooting accuracy, although Sturridge scored more goals. In a deeper position, Rooney was demonstrably the more creative provider and the more reliable in possession but there is no doubt, as a duo for England, they will provide a very dangerous threat combined.
