Former Manchester City player defends Arsenal's Mesut Ozil

Jerome Boateng was upset after the booing against Mesut Özil at the match between Germany and Cameroon.

Yesterday Germany drew against Cameroon in a preparation match for the World Cup and once again Mesut Özil was booed.

When the Arsenal playmaker left the pitch for his Arsenal team mate Lukas Podolski, the people in the stadium showed that they weren’t happy with his performance at all.

It was a reaction that upset Bayern’s defender and Özil’s team mate in the national team, Jerome Boateng. The former Manchester City player couldn’t understand the reaction.

“I don’t understand that. Then the people shouldn’t come to the stadium. I don’t understand that one starts booing that soon in such a match.”

The fans in Mönchengladbach, where the match took place, might have booed too soon but there was no doubt that Özil was the weakest player on the pitch. He was clearly outshone by the other two attacking midfielders Reus and Müller.

For the football fans in Germany it is quite frustrating to see Özil playing like this as has been chosen by them as the most popular national player over the last three years.

No other player has showed in the last few matches in the national team such a discrepancy between his skills and his actual performances.

German hopes of winning a title have been based on Özil’s performances in the last couple of tournaments. If he plays badly, now the people get a feeling that once again Germany will fall short in their quest to win a big title.

Özil himself didn’t want to say anything about the reaction of the fans in the stadium but everybody knows that he is very sensitive and that he really needs the support. The fans shouldn’t forget that Özil was injured for a long time during the season and that he can’t be at his top level yet.

Özil has constantly showed high quality performances for the national team in the last couple of years and therefore deserves more patience. Germany’s chances of winning the World Cup will definitely not increase with a play maker who’s lacking self-confidence.
