The Argentine will not feature in Brazil this summer, leaving him open to an early summer transfer.
With the World Cup about to start, the final squad confirmations have been coming through in the global media – with some good players not making the cut.
In a competitive Argentina midfield, one man to miss out is Ever Banega.
The 25-year-old has paid the price for an unstable 2013-14 at club level and as such will not add to his 24 caps this summer.
Banega has been on Valencia’s books since 2008, but was somewhat surprisingly loaned out to Newell’s Old Boys in January.
With this in mind, it seems that the fiery midfielder could well be available this summer – and with no participation at the World Cup it would give Premier League clubs the chance of a free run to acquire his services.
The Mirror today state that Sunderland and Tottenham are ready to fight over his services, but there is certainly a case to suggest that Banega would be a shrewd signing for one of the clubs competing in the Champions League.
Liverpool are looking to bolster their squad ahead of participating in Europe again, and Banega’s pass and move football, creative skills and technique would certainly fit into Brendan Rodgers’ way of playing.
Over at Manchester United, Louis van Gaal will need creative midfielders to breath life into an uninspiring middle third of the pitch.
Although bigger, household names will be linked with the Old Trafford club, Banega has been mentioned as a United target in the past and seems like a much more accomplished option than a host of the current incumbents in the Manchester outfit’s squad.
Potentially available at cut-price, Banega could well be the bargain of the summer.
