MARCA are reporting two possible Barcelona deals that would not only impact Manchester City, but could possibly give Premier League trio Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal a push in their respective challenges for the title next season.
MARCA claim that the Camp Nou side are desperate to make Argentina striker Sergio Aguero their marquee signing of the summer transfer window and state that the player himself could favour a change of scene in order to link up with attacking magician Lionel Messi, "who he gets on famously with."
The report even mentions that, whilst Manchester City would no doubt publicly reinforce the player's not-for-sale status, Aguero could force the deal by "declaring his desire to leave" the Etihad Stadium.
While Yaya Toure's exploits last season almost earned him Player of the Year accolades, Aguero remains instrumental to any future successes largely because of his reliability in front of goal. When it comes to combined goals and assists, Aguero was responsible for affecting the scoreline once every 66 minutes he was on the field; a statistic directly comparable to Liverpool star Luis Suarez's average of one goal/assist every 68 minutes.
City's main flaw last season, despite their Championship success, was their clear lack of a centre back partner to Vincent Kompany.
Martin Demichelis enjoyed a reputation-salvaging resurgence at the tail-end of the campaign, but it is believed that Manuel Pellegrini will be active when it comes to defensive recruitments in the summer market.
Any target would arguably be no superior than AS Roma stalwart Mehdi Benatia, a Morocco international schooled by the famous Clairefontaine academy responsible for the development of pitch legends like Thierry Henry.
City are keen on Benatia, however, Barcelona are eager to acquire the 27-year-old as they regard him to be the ideal replacement for Carles Puyol.
Benatia is engaging in talks with Roma over a new contract, while Bayern Munich and Chelsea also covet his signature. Barcelona, though, still have "their beady eye" on Benatia, write MARCA.
By purchasing both Aguero and Benatia, Barcelona would take the best striker out of City whilst also preventing them from sealing a deal for the best defender potentially available during the summer transfer period.
Providing Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal adopt an aggressive strengthening program, then there could be an even tighter Premier League title race next season…
