Reina: I’d like to stay at Napoli

Pepe Reina

Pepe Reina has admitted that he would like to return to Napoli permanently, giving new hope of a deal.

Just as it seemed Napoli's chances of signing Pepe Reina were fading, the Spanish international has given the Partenopei a boost in their pursuit.

Reina spent last season on loan with Napoli and became a fan favourite with an impressive campaign between the posts.

Napoli finished third in Serie A and won the Coppa Italia in a successful season but Reina's future has been unclear.

The 31-year-old has always insisted that his long-term future depends on Liverpool but has admitted that it looks unlikely he'll be needed at Anfield.

With rumoured moves to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid looking increasingly unlikely, Napoli seem to be the obvious destination, but the club aren't able to meet Reina's wage demands.

Nonetheless, it appears that Napoli has a special place in Reina's heart.

"I would like to stay," he is quoted as saying in Italian newspaper Il Mattino.

"But first I will have to talk about it with Liverpool."

Reina may have to accept a significant pay cut to make the move but Liverpool are unlikely to stand in his way, so much will depend on the player's wishes.
