As the season drew to a close, Liverpool were linked with a whole host of Southampton players.
The likes of Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana were all tipped to make the move to Anfield. But when the Reds and the Saints finally did business, it was a somewhat leftfield transfer, with Rickie Lambert completing a £4million move to Brendan Rodgers’ side.
The Lallana links continue, just as his price-tag continues to increase (at least on the back pages), with the £20million man now reportedly valued at £30million.
But in truth the completion of the Lambert deal suggests Liverpool may have no intention of bringing in his former St Mary’s teammate. After all, if Rodgers wanted both he could have completed a double-deal prior to the World Cup.
Instead he opted to move solely for Lambert – at least for now – in a canny piece of business that could go down as a master-stroke.
Perhaps any potential Lallana deal would be considerably more difficult to complete.
After all, Southampton will not want to dismantle a side that did so well under former boss Mauricio Pochettino. While they have now come out to say they have no need to accept any of the multiple bids for their stars. So one senses that Lambert will be the only Saints player heading to Anfield this summer.
Rodgers has shown how quickly a transfer can go through if you really want the player. And in doing nothing – at least in public – in regards to Lallana, it seems that rumour may never be anything more.
