Inter place £14.5m price-tag on Tottenham target - Three questions

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for midfielder Fredy Guarin this summer - and Inter have reportedly named their price.

With a difficult 2013/14 campaign on the books that saw Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood both shown the exit door, Spurs are now looking to regroup under the guidance of Maurico Pochettino.

Changes are expected at White Hart Lane this summer as the Argentine boss has been tasked with at last leading Tottenham back to the promised land of Ca top four finish in the Premier League.

A host of players have already been linked with the North London outfit, including a slew of Pochettino’s former Southampton charges.

Inter’s Fredy Guarin doesn’t fall into that category, but Spurs are nonetheless said to be weighing up a move for the former Manchester United and Chelsea target.

And according to Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter have slapped a £14.5 million price-tag on the 27-year-old, who is expected to leave San Siro amid a tortured relationship with the club’s supporters.

With the cost of signing Guarin now seemingly out in the open, following are three questions concerning his suitability for Tottenham.

Do Spurs need him?

Tottenham are well stocked in the centre of the park, and it’s a fair question to ask whether splashing out for another midfielder would be a responsible move.

Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli were all brought in just last summer at a significant cost, and this isn’t even taking into account record signing Erik Lamela - who could be considered a forward - or players with a longer history at the Lane such as Sandro and Mousa Dembele.

The problem for Spurs last season wasn’t a lack of quality in midfield, but rather organising a talented bunch in the proper way to get the best out of them.

Unless there are significant departures in this department, taking on Guarin would seemingly only add to an area of the squad that already has plenty of depth.

Is Guarin worth £14.5 million?

Inter’s motivation for selling the Colombian is to raise funds for new signings, and with Serie A rivals Juventus lurking in addition to Spurs, have slapped a premium price-tag on him.

It’s possible the Nerazzurri would be willing to deal Guarin for less than £14.5 million to a foreign club, though how much of a discount they’d be willing to give is unclear.

Anything more than £11 million would be a steep fee for Tottenham to pay for a player that Inter are actively looking to sell and they arguably don’t need.

If Spurs did sign Guarin, would he fit into Pochettino’s system?

One quality that Guarin has in spades is versatility, and that bodes well for his prospects in Pochettino’s fluid, high-pressing system.

At Inter, the Colombian has played everywhere from a withdrawn defensive midfield position to an advanced trequartista role and has demonstrated proficiency in all phases of the game.

The new Spurs boss would likely benefit from being able to deploy him in a wide variety of areas, though Guarin’s has at times shown a propensity for losing concentration - a tendency Pochettino is known to hold particular disdain for.
