Spain coach backs Chelsea’s record signing over City striker

Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque chose Chelsea striker Fernando Torres over Manchester City’s Alvaro Negredo to participate in this summer’s World Cup.

Spanish boss Vicente del Bosque had one of the most difficult managerial decisions of his career to make this week as he named his 23-man Spain squad.

La Roja have an abundance of world-class talent, good enough to field at least three sides at the World Cup which would be expected to reach the knockout stages.

Amongst their talent lies a richness of attacking quality, yet only three out-an-out strikers could make the trip.

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa was a given, despite his injury, which left Del Bosque to choose two of Fernando Torres, David Villa, Fernando Llorente and Manchester City man Alvaro Negredo.

Del Bosque spoke of his decision and hinted at experience as being the deciding factor, therefore opting for David Villa and Chelsea’s Fernando Torres and not Man City’s Alvaro Negredo.

He said: “In Fernando Torres, we have absolute confidence in him. That is why we selected him. Torres has played well and we are happy with the way he has worked.”

Statistically speaking, however, one would suggest the Manchester City striker comes out on top and should have won the vote.

Fernando Torres Chelsea FW 0.18 2.18 1.04 10.64 1.29 1.86 28 1,571

According to Opta stats, Negredo has scored more Premier League goals on average than Torres, played more accurate passes and has kept the ball better.

The Blues striker, on the other hand, has attempted more shots and works hard upfront to retrieve possession, turning over the ball almost double the amount of Alvaro Negredo.

But the underlying factor is Chelsea striker Torres has been a part of Spain’s most successful team in history, and after scoring in two out of the last three major finals, who would back against him doing it again?
