The real reason Arsenal want Carlos Vela, stunning alternate signing in mind?

Could Arsenal's links to Carlos Vela be due to interest in Antoine Griezmann?

Arsenal have been linked with buying Carlos Vela back from Real Sociedad, but could it all be bartering to get the player they really want?

The talented Mexican netted 20 goals for the Spanish side last season, a year after firing the unfancied side into the Champions League.

Vela has given mixed signals on returning to North London, an option which exists due to a buy-back clause in his contract at £3.8 million allowing Arsenal to bring back a player they sold two seasons ago.

In truth Vela never fulfilled his potential at Arsenal and has unfinished business, but with his best position on the right side of attack, a role occupied by Theo Walcott, could he find himself regularly consigned to the bench?

One possibility, is that Arsenal are using the buy-back clause as a high stakes bargaining chip when it comes to a player better suited to their current needs, French international Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann is poised to become a potential breakout star for France at the World Cup, a left-winger who bagged 16 goals in La Liga last season. For context that is the same figure as Manchester United's entire midfield managed in the Premier League.

He would present a far more explosive option in attack than Podolski or Cazorla from the left side, but competition for his signature is heavy.

PSG and Manchester United are just two high profile sides linked, but Arsenal hold a trump card thanks to Vela.

While they may not want to get into a bidding war with PSG, Arsenal can offer to negate the buy-back clause in Vela's contract, or simply not decide to exercise it, as part of an agreement for Griezmann.

This would allow Sociedad to keep at least one of their key attackers, or have the option to sell him elsewhere for a figure representative of his true value, likely at five times his release clause.

If a deal like this can be done, it will be an astute piece of business from the Gunners, and allow Vela to remain where he is if this is ultimately his preference.
