Long term United target set to sign three-year extension with €50m clause

Iker Muniain looks set to commit his future to Athletic Bilbao in the coming week.

Manchester United were unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League a few seasons back by an absolutely rampant Athletic Bilbao side containing the likes of Javi Martinez, Fernando Llorente and Iker Muniain.

While many stood out in that tie - it was the latter who really caught the eye.

Muniain was sensational throughout the game - showing off his dribbling proficiency and passing excellence throughout both legs and it even led to calls from many a United fan for Fergie to snap him up.

However he struggled in 2012-13 to find the same rhythm so much of the hype died down around him. Bur last campaign he was sensational again, helping Bilbao secure a Champions League spot next season.

That has also seen the rumour mill start churning his direction once again - with Barcelona, Liverpool and of course United all having their sporadic mentions.

But Bilbao are not looking to lose another big name player. Yesterday they tied up Mikel San Jose to a new deal - and Muniain's is just around the corner.

Reports in Spain suggest that the Basque club are close to agreeing a new deal with the attacking midfielder which would keep him at San Mames for the forseeable future.

He is currently on holiday, but is still expected to pen a new contract with the club in the coming weeks. The deal would extend his stay at Bilbao until 2018 and make him the highest paid player in the squad. Teams might have got excited when he admitted to talks about his future would be put on hold way back in February, however it seems those hopes are now dashed.

Unless, that is, they fancy spending €50 million on his services, as that is the reported release clause in his new deal at the club - so hope is not lost yet.
