Arsenal open talks with £25m striker - lesson learned from Higuain disaster?

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with real Madrid over a £25m swoop for striker Karim Benzema - have they learned from the Gonzalo Higuain saga?

By winning the FA Cup final with a 3-2 win over Hull City earlier this month, Arsenal clinched their first piece of silverware in almost nine years, bringing confidence back to the Emirates Stadium in the process. The club also clinched fourth place and subsequently Champions League football once again, but manager Arsene Wenger is now expected to spend this summer in order to get Arsenal challenging for more trophies.

The Gunners will be looking to land another marquee signing to keep the positivity around the club, especially after the reaction to signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £42.5m last summer. A number of big name players have already been linked, but it's another Real Madrid star who could be arriving in North London.

French striker Benzema has scored on a regular basis for the Spanish giants but has never really been much of a fan favourite, and with his contract set to expire in just a year's time, speculation suggests that Arsenal have opened talks over a £25m swoop in a bid to add more striking power around fellow French international Olivier Giroud.

Benzema is a huge name and one which will excite Arsenal fans around the world, but the situation feels somewhat similar to Arsenal's pursuit of Benzema's former Madrid team mate Higuain.

With Arsenal desperately needing more striking options last summer, they seemed poised to tie up a deal for Argentine hitman Higuain, but they stalled on the deal as they were unsure whether to spend so much on the striker, and he ultimately shunned a move to North London in order to sign for Napoli.

Adding a player like Higuain - or even Benzema - would make the Arsenal attack so much more dangerous, and this is the chance to show that their transfer policy is developing. Benzema is worth the money, and in order to challenge the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, they need to fork out for the best talent - and do it quickly before other teams can gazump them.
