Why Real Madrid have advantage over Arsenal to sign Antoine Griezmann

The European champions are today being linked with a move for the Real Sociedad winger, following their capture of Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad last summer.

European champions Real Madrid are widely expected to reinforce their superstar playing squad this summer, with a number of new targets being touted in the press.

The latest report in Cadena Ser suggests that Carlo Ancelotti’s men have one eye on Real Sociedad starlet Antoine Griezmann.

The France international will be given a chance to star at this summer’s World Cup after another excellent domestic campaign for the La Liga outfit.

Griezmann has been consistently linked with a move to the Premier League also, with Manchester United and Liverpool accredited with an interest.

However, it has been Arsenal that are most commonly mentioned as a major suitor of the goalscoring wideman and that are expected to make an advance to sign him this off-season.

However, Madrid may well have a real advantage in the race for Griezzman’s signature.

The Santiago Bernabeu outfit signed midfielder Asier Illarramendi from their fellow La Liga side last summer – with many suggesting that they overpaid for the promising star.

With a solid working relationship between the Spanish sides, Sociedad would not begrudge having to work with Madrid again if they are forced to sell Griezmann.

Arsenal on the other hand are currently deciding whether to activate a buy-back option on Carlos Vela.

The Mexican attacker moved to Sociedad in 2012, but the Gunners have a clause in his deal that means that he could return to North London this summer.

As such, Sociedad will feel slightly aggrieved with Arsenal stealing away one of their best players for a fee that does not fit Vela’s current form or ability.

As such, if given a choice, it appears that Sociedad would prefer to deal with Madrid than Arsenal.
