Steven Gerrard says Manchester United legend "is wrong!" - about what?

Liverpool skipper believes Paul Scholes was incorrect over his assertion that England forward Wayne Rooney's best years are already behind him.

Earlier in the month, legendary Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes - renowned for his close control and passing range - told Sky Sports that his former team-mate Wayne Rooney may have peaked too early in his career, implying that his best performances are behind him.

"Age 28 or 29 has been the normal 'peak'. With Wayne, it could have been when he scored 27 league goals in 2011/2012 when he was 26," said Scholes.

Whilst United finished in a disappointing seventh place in the Premier League table, having collected 64 points after 38 games - 22 fewer than local rivals and champions Manchester City - Rooney performed admirably. The Englishman is also expected to produce the goods for Roy Hodgson's Three Lions during the World Cup, with friendly international preparation beginning this evening, versus Peru.

One of Rooney's England team-mates rejects Scholes' assessment of the forward, as Steven Gerrard sends a message to the 39-year-old who has increasingly turned to punditry.

"Paul Scholes is wrong," Gerrard said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

"I think [Rooney has] been Manchester United's best player at home and in Europe. He's been in terrific form. I can only judge from my opinion but from what I've seen from his performances in the United team, his form has been really positive."

Gerrard is widely expected to feature in the same starting line-up as Rooney in the Peru match at Wembley Stadium tonight.

He added: "He's worked hard this week and he decided to do his own week of extra training.

"He seems in an awful better frame of mind going into this tournament than he's had going into previous tournaments when he's had injuries on his mind in the past.

"I'm excited about where Wayne Rooney is at."

Here are Rooney's key statistics from the previous three seasons - see if you can detect any decline in standards.
