The German newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung reported that VfL Wolfsburg from the Bundesliga wants to sign Romelu Lukaku for 30 million Euros. He would be the second Belgian player after Kevin de Bruyne who would leave Chelsea for Wolfsburg.
Borussia Dortmund were also said to be interested in Lukaku but now it seems as if they have signed Ciro Immobile from Torino for 19 million Euros. This would clear the path for Wolfsburg.
In January Wolfsburg signed Kevin de Bruyne from Chelsea for 25 million Euros and now they are willing to spend five million more to finally qualify for the Champions League and attack the dominating teams of Bayern Munich and Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
Money is not a problem for the North German team as they are sponsored by Volkswagen, which has its headquarters in Wolfsburg, and therefore they are now planning a big transfer attack. So far they have already signed Aaron Hunt from Werder Bremen and Sebastian Jung from Eintracht Frankfurt for next season, but Lukaku could be exactly the puzzle piece they are still missing.
Lukaku smashed home the goals for Everton last season - but is clearly not loved by Jose Mourinho - who is even believed to be considering using him as a makeweight in a deal to sign Mehdi Benatia from AS Roma.
Independently of whether this transfer will happen or not, it is becoming clear that Wolfsburg are building up a very competitive team for the future and it’s probably just a matter of time when they will star in the Champions League.
If they sign Lukaku, they might do more than that next season.
