Report: Liverpool wanted Wilfried Bony, not Rickie Lambert

Wilfried Bony and Kolo Toure Ivory Coast

Goal.com have suggested that the Reds had prioritised the Ivorian, but the Welsh side’s valuation scared them off.

It is being widely reported that Liverpool are closing in on a deal to bring Southampton striker Rickie Lambert to Anfield.

However, it may well be that the England international was not the number nine that Brendan Rodgers originally wanted to add to his squad in the off-season.

Goal.com are suggesting that the Merseysiders had originally identified Swansea star Wilfried Bony as the man to bolster their offensive options this summer.

However, Rodgers and co were convinced to make the move for Lambert after the Liberty Stadium side claimed they would not release their Ivorian for talks until a potential fee of £20 million had been agreed.

The Ivory Coast international has had an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League after becoming Swansea’s record signing last summer.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the powerful African attacker, however it appears that Swansea are not ready to let their star man leave he club without a fight.
