Manchester United have been repeatedly tipped to sign Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, but it seems that could be an impossible task.
Strootman seems to be exactly the player United were missing last season and the Red Devils were said to be close to launching a bid in January.
The Dutch international suffered a cruciate ligament injury and will miss out on the World Cup, but that doesn't seem to have discouraged Man United.
However, Roma are determined to keep their stars from last season who helped them finish runners-up in Serie A.
Having tied rising star Miralem Pjanic to a new contract and battling to stop defender Mehdi Benatia heading for Barcelona or Manchester City, Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is reportedly ready to fend off Manchester United's advances for Strootman.
The player seems content at Roma, who are nursing him back to fitness, and reports recently suggested that Strootman may even reject a move even if the two clubs came to an agreement.
It appears that even the influence of Holland national coach Louis van Gaal may not be enough to lure Strootman away from the Eternal City.
