Jordy Clasie is the latest name being touted with a move to Manchester United. According to the Manchester Evening News, incoming manager Louis Van Gaal wants to bring the talented playmaker to Old Trafford next season.
Van Gaal, who faces the summer World Cup with the Netherlands before heading to England, is said to be sticking with what he knows when looking for squad improvements. Clasie fits the bill, having played under the Dutchman at international level.
Here are three questions and the fan’s reaction to the proposed deal:
Is Clasie good enough for Manchester United?
The ‘Dutch Xavi’ possesses a host of qualities including superb positioning, accurate passing and excellent vision. He has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League and, ultimately, joining Manchester United would make sense.
Clasie cannot be categorised as a world-class midfielder, not yet in any case, but he is highly suitable for the system Louis Van Gaal will look to implement and this is significantly more important.
The assist he provided for Robin van Persie in Holland’s latest friendly, against Ecuador, can be seen as the perfect example of how he ideally likes to play. This goal also showcased the fantastic understanding the youngster already maintains with the Red Devil’s experienced striker.
The upcoming World Cup will provide a fine opportunity for the Dutch youngster to prove his worth.
Is he the answer to the club’s midfield problems?
It is generally expected that the midfielder could become “the next big thing” to emerge from the Dutch ranks and, while Clasie is not the finished product that United fans are asking for, he has the potential to become a top quality asset. He has his entire career ahead of him and under Louis Van Gaal, at Old Trafford, the sky is the limit.
At just 22 years of age, he doesn’t currently have the experience required to single-handedly reinvigorate United’s midfield, but he would work well alongside another dynamic player. With this in mind, it’s likely that the Dutch boss will target at least one more midfielder.
He is effective in both an attacking and defensive capacity and, in this sense, he is actually a more suitable player than the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos; two of the names that have been linked with club in previous weeks.
What does this transfer mean for Tom Cleverley?
Clasie’s arrival could signal the end of Tom Cleverley’s first team career at Old Trafford. The Englishman would likely become surplus to requirements by the incoming Van Gaal.
The Englishman has been linked with a move away from the club since the end of the season, with Everton seeming his most probable destination. After all, Roberto Martinez has already coached him during his loan days at Wigan.
This transfer could provide the perfect opportunity for the 24-year-old to rebuild a reputation that has been left in tatters.
