Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes Tottenham Hotspur could now beat his old club to the signing of Luke Shaw after appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager.
Shaw has been tipped to join United this summer in a £30million deal. But no move has yet materialised, and having seen his Southampton manager move to White Hart Lane, there is a suggestion he could follow.
Speaking to Talk Sport on Wednesday morning, Pallister said, “I heard Shaw saying how delighted he was to play for him (Pochettino) and what he has done for his game. It could be a spanner in the works for United.
“If you have got that personal insight into a player and that personal relationship, it gives you an added advantage.”
Tottenham could well be looking for a new left-back despite reports they will offer Danny Rose a new contract. And in Shaw they will be signing one of the most exciting young full-backs in Europe.
The 18-year-old has been outstanding for Southampton this season and has also attracted links to Chelsea and Liverpool.
He is expected to play a big part in the World Cup this summer, after which he could well leave St Mary’s despite making his breakthrough at a club that prides itself on bringing through young players.
While United appear to have slipped back in the race after offering Patrice Evra a contract extension, Tottenham’s appointment of Pochettino could well see them sneak in to pull off one of the best transfers of the summer.
