Chelsea legend donates one million Euros

Didier Drogba Ivory Coast

This amount was given by Didier Drogba to the families of the coal miners who died two weeks ago in a mining accident in Turkey.

The Galatasaray star decided to help the families of the coal miners who died after an explosion in a mine in Soma in Turkey. On May 13th 301 miners lost their lives after an explosion had caused a fire in the mine.

When journalists asked Drogba about his motivation for this donation he said that he just wanted to help. “I am a UNDP Goodwill embassador and want to do everything to help the people in Soma. But I don’t want to show off with it, that’s not my style. I don’t need that kind of self expression.”

Normally one would think of a PR-motivated action when a footballer donates such a big amount of money, but Drogba’s case is different since it wasn’t the first time that the former Chelsea player did something for a good cause.

In 2009 he donated three million Euros for the construction of a hospital in his home town Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. Apart from that he has also played an important role in bringing peace to his country.

After the Ivory Coast qualified for the 2006 World Cup, Drogba begged the war parties to lay down their arms which led to a cease fire after five years of civil war. Eventually the peace process started and Drogba became a member of the Truth, Reconciliation and Dialogue Commission after the civil war in the Ivory Coast.

In 2007 the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) appointed him as a Goodwill Ambassador to help to raise awareness on African problems.

All his charity work and his involvement in the peace process convinced the Time magazine in 2010 to name Drogba as one of the world's 100 most influential people. Many people in Africa say that after Mandela’s death he has become one the most influential people in Africa.

His donation for the families of dead miners in Soma showed once again that Drogba is much more than just a very good football player and that he is able to use his popularity for important causes outside the pitch. The World Cup hasn’t started yet, but for many people Didier Drogba is already the football player of the year.
