Arsenal's 'next Rio Ferdinand' will never realise his dream at the club

Once compared to the now former Manchester United star, Zach Fagan has been released by Arsenal.

Juts like last summer when their cuts reached into double figures, Arsenal did not let sentiment prevent them releasing seven players on their books last week.

Among them was young defender Zach Fagan, a once very highly regarded prospect at the club.

Fagan, 19, had been at Arsenal since the age of 10, and been tipped to become a great.

The youngster was once compared to both Rio Ferdinand and Barcelona's Eric Abidal, and told Arsenal's website back in 2011

"It's funny people say that because those are the two players that I like to watch all the time. I watch clips on Youtube and try watch games where they are playing.

"I like to focus on them, to see what they do on and off the ball, their positioning especially. I feel that I have learned from them but I am learning a lot in training too."

The centre-back however remained some way off the first team despite his raw potential, having seen his progress badly hampered by injury.

This past season he only played one game for Arsenal's under-21 side.

Fagan has already secured his next move, signing a one-year-deal with non-League side Welling United, report KentOnline.

The opportunity may not be what Fagan originally had in mind for his career path, but it's likely to be a wise one in terms of playing regular football and he can aim to work his way up the football ladder from scratch.
