Paris Saint-Germain central defender Marquinhos was a reported target for Manchester United last summer whilst at Italian club AS Roma.
The Brazilian international instead opted to move for the French capital, though his stay at Paris Saint-Germain looks to be a short one if reports are to be believed.
According to the French source beIN Sports via Catalan paper Diario Sport, Barcelona are close to concluding a €20m plus Dani Alves deal for the central defender.
Following David Luiz’s protracted move to PSG, Marquinhos, who only made 17 Ligue 1 starts anyway, has fallen further down the pecking order with Barcelona set to take full advantage,
The proposed deal, however, could be seen as a big opportunity missed for Manchester United as the Red Devils themselves are in desperate need for new blood in central defence.
The summer departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have left the United light at the back, and there remains questions marks over the ability of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling as possible long-term replacements.
Measuring 6ft 0inch and acquiring both pace and excellent ball ability at the back, Marquinhos is pretty much the full package and one player Man United boss Louis Van Gaal could have counted on for the long-haul.
As it happens, Barcelona appear in pole position to land the youngster and as for Manchester United, it’s another excellent youngster labelled with an Old Trafford what-if story.
