Incoming Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is expected to make wholesale changes at the Old Trafford outfit.
As many as 10 players could be leave United this summer, although the decision to sell so many stars could backfire. Van Gaal wants United to return to Champions League fold within one year but if nearly a dozen players are sold and say, several replacements are brought in, it could take several months before the players gel with one another.
Anyhow, looking at the defenders who are certain to go, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand top the list, both leaving on free transfers. Vidic is joining Serie A giants Inter Milan, while Ferdinand is “seriously considering” a move to newly-promoted Queen Park Rangers, although the club have dismissed the rumors as “pure speculation”. Ferdinand is certain to leave United however.
Patrice Evra has been handed a new contract so he stays but Alexander Buttner's future could become doubtful if Luke Shaw joins United.
Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Rafael Da Silva are all expected to stay.
Moving on, in midfield, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher don’t appear to be going anywhere. Tom Cleverley is in the danger of getting sold with Everton and Arsenal interested although there’s nothing concrete at present and van Gaal might give the midfielder a chance to prove himself. Moreover, it is unlikely the Red Devils will get a decent transfer fee for the lad at present.
Anderson could stay as United are struggling to find a potential buyer for him after Fiorentina decided not to sign him permanently. The Brazilian could see out his contract at United and leave for nothing next summer.
Talking about the wingers, Luis Nani is “likely to leave”, but van Gaal can turn around the Portugal international’s mind if he fancies the 27-year-old. Ashley Young is also expected to face the axe and so does Wilfried Zaha, as per reports. Ryan Giggs has retired so you won't see him on the football pitch anymore.
Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie look to stay. Danny Welbeck has expressed his frustration with the lack of playing time at United so far, hence, his future is in smoke. Javier Hernandez faces a similar doubtful next couple of months after being told by his national team boss to ditch United. Ferderico Macheda and Bebe are surely leaving.
Predicted players going out are: Vidic, Ferdinand, Nani, Macheda, Bebe, Giggs and maybe Zaha and Anderson. Welbeck, Hernandez, Anderson, Young and Cleverley face doubtful futures. A summer of change lies ahead.
