We take a look at three bargain buys Manchester United could make this summer ahead of a rejuvenated title push.
Manchester United will be in uncharted territory this summer when attracting players due to their failure to qualify for any European competition next season.
Nevertheless, the supporters have been openly addressed with regards to big summer transfer plans with some reports even predicting they could break the £200m bracket.
Although we expect Manchester United to spend heavily in the summer, we take a look at three players they could bring in at less than half of the price as some of their mentioned illustrious targets.
1) Alex - Paris Saint-Germain
The 31-year-old defender could prove to be a shrewd signing for Manchester United this summer, especially after losing their two most experienced centre-backs.
As a tentatively used Chelsea centre-back for four-and-a-half seasons, he may not be the first name on every Manchester United fans wishlist; however, he has been an important part of an impressive PSG side for the past two seasons. AC Milan, along with Galatasaray, are interested in the former Brazil international, but Manchester United would no doubt be seen as heavy favourites if they became interested.
Although he may not be a player that would start every week, it is his experience that could come in useful over the course of the season as they chase the league title.
2) Tony Jantschke - Borussia M.Gladbach
The 24-year-old defender has been hard done by this season after being overlooked by the media in favour of the likes of Christian Gunter and Matthias Ginter.
According to whoscored, the Mönchengladbach academy product was in fact one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga last season, showing himself incredibly competent at three different positions. Although he was predominantly used at centre-back this season, he also spent a lengthy spell at right-back and on a few rare occasions even central-midfield.
He is a player who rarely looses the ball, rarely gets beaten in the air or allows himself to get caught of position. He possess the same strengths as Mats Hummels, according to the stats, and could cost a fifth of the price.
3) James Ward-Prowse - Southampton
After last season, it was evident Manchester United needed to bring in midfielders that could offer that killer ball on a regular occasion.
Although the Saints youngster is still quite young, he has been lauded for his ability to spread the ball with consummate ease. He has impressed both in the Premier League and on the international stage with the under-21s, which have prompted comparisons with England legend David Beckham.
He is another player that can play a number of different positions and is very much one for the future. Although he would be expensive in comparison to the other two mentioned, he would undoubtedly come with biggest potential.
