On this day: Arsenal to go all out for Rooney? Chelsea close in on first Mourinho signing

Stories about Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all feature.

All eyes are now on the World Cup with the domestic season over following the football league play-offs last week.

The sides in question will be enjoying promotion to another level or dealing with the disappointment as they prepare for another attack on each league next season.

England have a friendly game against Peru this Friday which will also have fans talking with Roy Hodgson likely to experiment and give game time to some younger members of his World Cup squad.

We’ve taken a look back at the stories that had fans talking on this day last year.

‘Arsenal to go all out for Rooney?’

It’s around this time last year that Arsenal started to be strongly linked with Wayne Rooney.

Rooney had just told Manchester United that he wanted to leave Old Trafford, alongside Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The stumbling block in the eyes of the Gunners appeared to be Rooney’s personal package which would have exceeded anything any Arsenal player was earning.

‘Chelsea set to secure Van Ginkel deal’

Chelsea closed in on the signing of highly rated Dutch midfield prospect Marko Van Ginkel.

Van Ginkel was one of Vitesse Arnhem’s standout players during the 2012/2013 season, which prompted Jose Mourinho to move quickly and secure him during his second spell in charge of the club.

He featured under Mourinho last season before a bad knee injury halted his immediate Chelsea career.

‘Meulensteen considers United position’

Rene Meulensteen was reportedly considering his position at Manchester United after David Moyes was appointed to follow Sir Alex Ferguson.

He was offered a new role in the Moyes era but chose to turn it down and move onto a fresh challenge.

Meulensteen was in charge of Fulham last season, before he was replaced with the West London club desperate to avoid relegation, which they couldn’t pull off.
