Liverpool and Arsenal transfer target Bakkali criticised by his own assistant manager

Zakaria Bakkali

Reported Liverpool and Arsenal target Zakaria Bakkali has been criticised by his PSV superiors.

Zakaria Bakkali has ended 2013/14 with a whimper, having begun it with a bang, scoring a sensational hat-trick in just his second game in the Eredivisie back in August.

Then 17, the Belgian teenager's name suddenly became linked with clubs across Europe, with even Real Madrid mentioned.

His season tailed off however, failing to score another goal in the division all season, of which for him consisted 16 games in total.

Liverpool and Arsenal have been continually linked with his signature however, and his future remains uncertain thanks to his refusal to sign a new contract.

His time at the PSV has taken another twist, after he was criticised by assistant boss Ernest Faber following what he saw as lack of effort during the retiring Park Ji Sung's farewell match.

He said: "In possession, there is no problem, but when he lost the ball three times, let his man run.

"I do not like it, I'd rather play someone who is eager and motivated. If someone does not want or does not perform his duties, there is someone else ready."

After the hype at the start of the season, it's possible Bakkali has lost focus, and this is certainly a warning from his coach.

Tipped for Belgium's World Cup squad, Adnan Januzaj's selection ended his fading chances of making the tournament.

Bakkali may have much to do to prove to Premier League clubs he is worth the investment. Signing a new deal at PSV and knuckling down may just be the smartest thing the 18-year-old can do for his career right now.
