Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma could be set for an extended spell in France according to the latest report.
Jose Mourinho’s side paid £15million to sign the St Etienne defender in January, but they immediately loaned him back to the Ligue 1 side for the rest of the season. And while many expected him to return to Stamford Bridge this summer and compete for a first-team spot, Chelsea may have other ideas.
France Football claims that Zouma could remain at St Etienne for another 12 months, as he is reportedly not part of Mourinho’s plans for the coming campaign.
With John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and Tomas Kalas all on the Blues’ books, it may be that Mourinho sees Zouma’s time as coming when Terry’s comes to an end. But it could be the last on that list – Kalas – who really benefits if Zouma remains on loan for the short term.
Kalas shone when he made his senior debut against Liverpool last season, and he has the talent to succeed in the Premier League.
With David Luiz on his way to Paris Saint-Germain, the 21-year-old Czech player could find more chances coming his way, especially if Zouma is not there to compete with him.
Kalas made Mourinho’s match-day squad a number of times last season and looks set to do so again, with more chances in the starting XI surely only a matter of time.
Had Zouma also been in contention, Chelsea would have had too many options and not enough spaces. Although, it could also be suggested, that the 19-year-old centre-back is only remaining in France because Chelsea are reportedly pursuing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
Now that certainly would not be good news for Kalas. But if Zouma remains in France for a while yet, and no new central defenders arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer, then Kalas could find himself on the verge of a career-defining campaign.
