Edwin van der Sar has been speaking about one of the men new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will be bringing with him to Old Trafford.
Hoek was van der Sar’s goalkeeping coach at Ajax and the latter had the following to say about the 57-year-old:
“He groomed me and helped me to learn all the things I needed to know to be a succesful footballer over a lot of years.
“Like Louis van Gaal he’s really exact with his exercises. They both put a lot of thought into them.
“He was one of the first guys I know who connected the goalkeepers with defenders and midfielders in terms of exercises.
“He would think about the different situations you might yourself be in during a game and try to find exercises and drills for us that he would combine with the outfield players.”
Hoek is currently on duty with the Holland national team as they prepare for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. But after that he will get to work developing a relationship with David de Gea, who is fast-becoming one of the most impressive goalkeepers in the game.
Much has been said about the new players van Gaal may or may not be bringing to United this summer, but it could be that Hoek – and another assistant coach Marcel Bout – play just as significant a role in turning this United side back into champions once again.
