Chelsea £80m deals mocked but it has come true

Mata Chelsea Free Kick

Chelsea sales of Mata and Luiz were derided when first mentioned as possibilities. Now both have come true.

It is almost one year ago since a report was published in Spanish newspaper Marca, stating that Chelsea could sell two star players.

The paper claimed Jose Mourinho planned to sell David Luiz and Juan Mata, hinting both could be among his first actions as boss.

Both players had come off impressive seasons under interim boss Rafa Benitez, and the idea of getting rid appeared stupendous.

Popular Chelsea blog 'We Ain't Got No History', went to town on the rumour, running an article entitled: 'This is quite possibly the funniest Chelsea FC rumour of all time'.

It stated: 'Brace yourselves, something amazing is coming. Something totally, utterly, truly, amazing. Not content with the rumours David Luiz is on his way out of Chelsea because Jose Mourinho doesn't like him, Marca have decided to take the winding up to new levels. Claiming that the Special One is trying to ship Juan Mata out of Chelsea'.

Fast forward 12 months and both David Luiz and Juan Mata have been sold, the former just last Friday, with figures for the pair fetching almost £80 million.

So how exactly did this happen? Well it could be that Marca got lucky, or they were pretty well informed after all.

Mourinho may have made it clear he didn't rate the pair before he arrived, and this translated into the teams he selected.

He decided not to sell both straight away, and gave them chances to prove him wrong, Mata lasted just six months though.

Perhaps Mourinho never really wanted to sell Luiz, and he just found the fee PSG offered for the Brazilian too good to turn down, it's very plausible.

In the era of Financial Fair Play, retrieving that sort of huge money for two players he found did not fit his philosophy is a superb return, and gives the Blues plenty to play with in the transfer market this summer.

After two trophyless seasons the Special One needs a good bounce-back year, and just like last summer's ridiculed transfer rumour, time will tell whether he has got this one right.
