Arsenal target Karim Benzema is reportedly demanding a pay rise to keep him at Real Madrid next season.

The Frenchman has been a long term target for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and is the ideal calibre of striker the Gunners need to partner and improve Olivier Giroud heading into next season.

However, should Real Madrid give in to his demands then the Gunners may not get the chance to do a deal, but it works both ways.

“The France striker, believed to be a target for Arsenal, is demanding a huge pay rise but the European champions are hopeful of reaching an agreement with the 26-year-old before the World Cup,” reports the Daily Mail.

The demands are risky on Benzema’s part because Los Blancos have a great deal of attacking talent and are more than capable of attracting some of the best strikers in the world.

There are still lingering reports the club could move to sign Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, although the Uruguayan has made repeated claims that he’s more than happy at Anfield.

If Real Madrid react to these Benzema demands negatively then it plays right into Arsenal’s hands because if they’re going to axe him, the Gunners are ready to offer him a route away from Spain.

However, Carlo Ancelotti and Florentino Perez could both be open to rewarding the forward for his exploits last season.

He scored 22 goals and produced 15 assists in La Liga and Champions League football last season, which isn’t a bad return by any means and grounds for an improved deal.

Perez is the key man in any negotiations over his future as he handles a lot of big money transfers and contracts personally as president and his future could come down to whether he’s done enough to eradicate the doubts Perez reportedly had over him at the start of last season.

If Arsenal get the chance to do a deal for Benzema, they’ll gobble him up but based on these comments from the Daily Mail, he seemingly wants to stay at the Bernabeu.
