German tabloid Bild has reported that FC Freiburg star Matthias Ginter is desperate for a move to Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The highly rated 20-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United last season, with interest also coming from North London with Arsenal also thought to be keen on a deal.
BVB look set to offer him the chance to stay in German football and if the move goes through, it could aid United in their pursuit of current Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels.
“Ginter desperately wants a move to BVB,” reads a brief summary of the current transfer situation surrounding Ginter according to Bild.
It’s unlikely that BVB boss Jurgen Klopp would allow a high profile deal for one of his best players like Hummels, unless he had a cast iron replacement lined up to soften the blow.
Hummels is thought to be one of Louis van Gaal’s main transfer targets for Manchester United, as the former Premier League champions recover from the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
There is still a slim chance that either United or Arsenal could prevent Ginter from committing to a BVB move, but in United’s case he actually aids their chances of getting Hummels.
They would also be battling against Ginter’s apparent desire to stay in the Bundesliga over moving to a foreign league and culture when he’s still a very young man learning his trade in the top flight European game.
Hummels is a signing that would be a huge statement of intent for United, at a time when several have questioned the club’s ability to attract the best players without any European football to offer.
Klopp has built part of his current reputation around investing in younger players and turning them into the best stars that Germany has to offer.
While he’ll be keen to retain Hummels to go alongside Ginter (if he signs for Dortmund), Ginter’s arrival means that if United dangle a big enough carrot over BVB’s head for Hummels, they may just bite.
